Administrative assistant employment opportunities are at a historical all time high. As businesses struggling under the burden of a limping economy continue to feel the pinch, the demand for individuals capable of handling a wide variety of clerical jobs and department assistant duties has increased.
Additionally, advances in technology have led to a broadening of the level of responsibilities for administrative assistants. The role of the administrative assistant was traditionally limited to performing miscellaneous clerical duties and the handling and typing of correspondence, but nowadays with the universal use of word processors, the timeframe required to carry out these functions has decreased dramatically. Administrative assistants now have the opportunity to take on responsibilities previously unavailable to them, such as those formerly reserved for managerial staff, and although this may ultimately result in a slower growth in administrative assistance hiring for some industries, the growth potential for others continues to expand.
The current top five fields for administrative assistants are:
- Professional and technical services.
- Education.
- Office Services and Staffing.
- Business Management.
While the growth of administrative assistant positions as a whole are expected to slow, job numbers are still projected to increase gradually over time. The largest growth is expected in the medical and legal fields, due to the rapid expansion of both industries.
Medical. Skills additional to those of the standard administrative assistant are often required by those entering the medical field. Applicants should have a background in medical transcription, medical billing and coding, and a familiarity and knowledge of laboratory procedures. A friendly yet professional disposition is also valued due to the nature of the industry. Sometimes those in the medical field see people at their worst, and the interpersonal skills necessary to sensitively deal with a variety of personality types is essential.
Legal. Although legal expertise is not always a requirement of administrative assistant jobs within this field, a fundamental knowledge of legal terms and practices is strongly desired. Legal administrative assistants work closely with both lawyers and their clients to effectively prepare casework and documentation. Needless to say, a discreet demeanor is a primary requirement of a job that works towards strengthening the client/company relationship.
A number of websites offer resume database services to those seeking employment in the administrative assistant field. These databases are screened frequently by employers seeking the most qualified individuals to fill job vacancies, and is the most effective method of gaining exposure.
