The ABC's of Work Ethics

Ask any employer to list the characteristics they look for in an employee, and you'll invariably find that above education and experience, good business ethics always tops the list.

Business ethics, sometimes also referred to as corporate ethics, refers to the value that someone holds for hard work, and for the satisfaction that work brings them. Having good business ethic means you work hard and are darn proud of it. Simple enough to come by, or so one might think.

Everyone’s encountered at least one shining example of poor work ethic: the person who always comes to work late, contributes little, complains to no end, and usually ends up losing their job. Such incidents are not isolated, or rare: recently the US Department of Labor estimated that poor work ethic accounts for 80 percent of all job losses.

Business ethics are not exclusive to specific business types. No matter your location or area of expertise, whether you’re advancing the corporate ladder in a Seattle law firm or scouring the online classifieds for Philadelphia jobs with an emphasis on green technology, the importance of staying well versed in the principles of business ethics cannot be overstated.

The ABC’s of Work Ethics:

  • Attendance – Being there is the first step to proving your reliability.

  • Attitude – Positivity is infectious. An employee with a positive attitude is twice as valuable as one without it.

  • Appearance – Taking pride in yourself reflects positively on you, and your employer.

  • Character – Honesty and initiative may be rare these days, but they don’t have to be.

  • Communication Skills – If you can’t let people know exactly what you want, you’ll never get it.

  • Cooperation – Nothing is ever accomplished if everyone pulls in different directions.

  • Organizational Skills – Nothing is more important to getting the job done on time.

  • Productivity – Elbert Hubbard said “If you work for a man, in heaven’s name work for him!” Words to live and work by.

  • Respect – You get what you give. Respect is self-perpetuating, and nothing feels better when it comes back around.

  • Teamwork – “Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.” (Ryunosuke Satoro)

The ethics outlined above are pieces of an interlocking jigsaw puzzle that lay out the requirements inherent in any career. The administrative assistant job description may differ vastly from that of a short-order cook, but the common element for success in either is the same.
