One of the skills that is an inherent function of all administrative assistant work is the ability to work well with people of different personality types. An administrative assistant not only maintains a tight ship that allows their employer to function at a higher level without worry that the small details will be neglected, but are also often the front line of communication between boss and subordinates, and between boss and customers.
For this very reason, the administrative assistant has to be skilled in the art of working with many different and varying personality types. Communication skills must be highly attuned to a level not shared by many others. The ability to do so is valuable not only for getting things done, but also for maintaining the peace in dynamic, stressful work environments.
Some people are born with an innate gift that others don’t possess when it comes to the necessary know-how for getting along with different types of people. To others it doesn’t come as naturally, creating a recipe for a potentially dysfunctional work environment. Fortunately, this is something that can be learned through various methods of career training and patient observation.
The 4 basic personality types:
Driver. These individuals “take the wheel” when it comes to work, especially when working in groups. They can be extremely driven when setting career goals. Due to their desire to accomplish decisively, they can sometimes come off as rude or blunt.
Expressive. The expressive personality is sometimes guilty of being all talk, little action, but are excellent communicators. Typically the backbone of any enterprise, they serve in a motivational capacity when working in a group.
Amiable. Although sometimes having difficulty making decisions and sticking to them, the amiable personality tends to avoid conflict and adapts easily to change.
Analytical. Sometimes overly critical of others, the Achilles’ heel of the analytical personality is their tendency to be pessimistic. Known for being highly detail oriented, they sometimes have difficulty making a decision until they have all the facts in front of them.
Understanding the 4 basic personality types allows you to achieve maximum results by knowing how to approach, communicate with, and react to people of varying natures. Understanding the motivations, driving factors and personality quirks of the people around us helps us to keep a balance, and to create a more harmonious work environment where all can thrive and the contributions of none are discounted.
