The Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin School for the Deaf (WSD) is currently seeking a full-time school year (88%) Teacher - ASL Specialist. This position is located at 309 W. Walworth Avenue, Delavan. WSD operates a residential school for children ages three to twenty-one with deafness and/or hearing impairments. The school provides academic and career education on site. The school also offers instructional and technical assistance, teaching materials and evaluations of pupils to local school districts and other agencies. This full-time school year (88%) position is in pay schedule 13, pay range 05. Starting pay is $19.336 per hour, plus excellent benefits. Plus additional compensation up to $2.97 per hour may be given for credits relevant to the position beyond a Bachelor's degree. A twelve month probationary period will be required. Job Duties: The Teacher - American Sign Language (ASL) Specialist provides leadership and direction in the area of ASL curriculum development, ASL instruction deployment (for both first and second language learners), ASL assessment, language planning efforts, bilingual learning theories application, and cultural knowledge dissemination to WSD students, WESP-DHH staff, community members, and interested others. In conjunction with the WSDs ASL English Resource Team (AERT) and WSD Administration Management Team (AMT), this position works to develop a model, campus-wide ASL/English bilingual-bicultural program. This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing ASL programming as needed for staff and students and, at the discretion of the administration, interested others (students or staff) not attending WSD. A percentage of this position is engaged in the direct delivery of academic instruction to students individually or in a classroom setting. Special Notes: - Licensure or eligibility for licensure in Deaf or Hard of Hearing (805) by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction is required. Questions regarding licensure may be directed to DPI licensing staff at . - An American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) rating level of at least 4 upon hire and 5 upon completion of probation is required. - A criminal background check will be conducted prior to an offer of hire. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of linguistic and cultural aspects of American Sign Language; current best practices in the area of ASL assessment, ASL curriculum, and ASL instruction; techniques for diagnostic assessment of sign language skills, such as the ASL Proficiency Index (ASLPI); the implications of hearing loss and their impact on learning and language; instructional techniques for individual and group instruction and training for adults and children; class management techniques; educational technologies both hardware and software which can supplement ASL assessment and/or instruction; and Bilingual Bicultural learning theories and philosophies. Ability to use and operate various media equipments (computers, projectors, document cameras, digital cameras, SMART boards, etc).
