  • This is a clerical position which provides support to the Department of Public Works.

    Performs a variety of clerical duties of a routine and recurring nature, including typing, filing, and preparation of standard forms.


    1. Composes correspondence, reports, forms, and other documents independently or from handwritten drafts or verbal instructions.

    2. Under close direction, compiles data from varied sources and makes summary reports as required. May involve routine mathematical calculations and tabulations in accordance with established methods.

    3. Receives and screens callers with complaints or problems and directs them to the appropriate party for disposition.

    4. Often develops and maintains computerized spreadsheets and databases to enter information and generate reports.

    5. Operates office machines, such as photocopiers and scanners, facsimile machines, voice mail systems, and personal computers.

    6. Answers telephones, direct calls, and take messages.

    7. Communicate with customers, employees, citizens, and other individuals to answer questions, disseminate or explain information.

    8. Reviews files, records, and other documents to obtain information to respond to requests.

    9. Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.


    Knowledge of:

    • Modern office practices and procedures.

    • Methods and techniques of proper telephone etiquette

    • Principles and procedures of record keeping and filing

    • Methods and techniques for basic report preparation and writing

    • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation

    • Business letter writing and basic report preparation

    Ability to:

    • Ability to assemble data and prepare accurate records and reports.

    • Perform mathematical calculations quickly and accurately including to add and subtract, multiply and divide, and calculate percentages, fractions, and decimals.

    • Must possess excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to work with numerous interruptions and work effectively under time constraints to meet deadlines.

    • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, as well as establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.

    • Implement and maintain filling systems.

    • Deal successfully with the public, in person and over the telephone; respond tactfully, clearly, concisely, and courteously to issues, concerns, and needs

    • Excellent communication skills; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

    • Ability to perform assigned duties with a minimum of supervision; interpret and apply policies and procedures within limits of authority.


    • High school diploma or equivalent and one (1) or more years of general clerical experience.

    • Previous training or education in business preferred.

    • A

      bility to type a minimum of 40 words per minute accurately.

    • Attention to detail and must be comfortable with decision making.

    • Must possess excellent computer skills and be proficient with Microsoft Office applications, and have the ability to learn the New World software platform.

    • Work requires regular in-person attendance on the days and times scheduled, a high level of mental alertness, and integrity.
