Engineering Division - Advancing Science by Design

The Engineering Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) offers an exciting career opportunity for an experienced mechanical technician to work on unique and challenging scientific projects at a world-renowned national laboratory.

You will have an opportunity to:

  • Be a part of a world-renowned, international research institution that is associated with 11 Nobel Laureates.

    Key Responsibilities for ME Technician (level 2):
  • Apply technical knowledge and expertise in mechanical and electromechanical technology, fabricate, assemble, machine, install, set-up, operate, test, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot equipment processes or systems associated with mechanisms, vacuum systems, cryogenic equipment, and related scientific research apparatus.
  • Fabricate and manipulate delicate miniature parts and assemblies using existing or improvised tooling.
  • Use microscopes and optical measuring equipment for precision assembly and component testing.
  • Use various adhesive and epoxy systems to fabricate parts and assemblies.
  • Provide design details where lacking and recommend modifications to engineering designs, as necessary.
  • Document process, final results, and any equipment or system modifications, etc.

    For the ME Technician (level 3), the following are in addition to the above responsibilities:
  • Independently perform highly complex assignments; select and utilize specialized metallic and non-metallic materials, processes, formulations, and methods in fabrication, set-up, use tools, equipment, and specialized machines.
  • Lead and coordinate job efforts, and train junior employees, as necessary.

    Qualifications for ME Technician (level 2):
  • Technical background in mechanical and/or electromechanical technology; general knowledge of mechanical equipment design procedures and techniques
  • Experience performing general set-ups, testing, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, and operation/maintenance of complex equipment/systems (mechanical, electromechanical, and scientific)
  • Hands-on experience in assembling, testing and measuring complex mechanical components and equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, sketches, parts lists, layout and assembly drawings and manuals (operation, calibration, and repair)
  • Proven ability to accomplish assignments, independently and successfully
  • AA degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or the equivalent in formal industrial or military training is preferred.
  • Familiarity with routine PC applications such as spreadsheets and databases and word processors is desired.

    For consideration at the ME Technician (level 3), the following qualifications are required in addition to the above:
  • Extensive and advanced technical understanding of mechanical or electromechanical technology and work practices, scientific and engineering principles, and technical applications of algebra and trigonometry
  • Ability to lead and train others

    This position, at either job classification level, has the following physical requirements:
  • Manual dexterity
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders
  • Work from heights and in confined spaces
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

    Notes: Determination of job classification level will be based on relevant experience, knowledge, skill, and ability of the successful candidate. This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes and requires completion of a background check. Work may be preformed in clean rooms and radiological controlled areas. Travel to domestic and international collaborating research locations may be required, depending on project needs.
