Finding that perfect balance between your personal life and career can be challenging. Both aspects of your life are filled with surprises, and juggling both can become overwhelming. Achieving a harmonious work-life balance makes you a more productive worker and a happier person overall, but it takes some effort. Here are some simple tips to help you meet your career goals without neglecting your passions, hobbies, family and friends.

Make Plans in Advance

In order to achieve the perfect work-life balance, you need to track your time spent at work and at home. A simple way to do this is to use a planner or smartphone to create and keep plans. Whether you're scheduling a trip to the park with the kids or a meeting with a client, having your schedule clearly laid out means you know what to expect. This allows you to fill open slots with additional professional or personal obligations as needed to even the scales.

Stay Motivated

Procrastination leads to stress later. It's critical that you follow through on your professional obligations, as well as your personal plans so you don't throw off your schedule. Try to stay focused on the bigger picture. For example, waking up early for work can be difficult, but that means you will have time to spend with your family in the evening. Achieving a healthy work-life balance may require short-term sacrifices, but remember that there's a light at the end of the tunnel.

Get a Good Night's Sleep

A solid night of rest empowers you to fulfill the day's duties. If you're tired, everything becomes more difficult. Experts recommend that adults get 8-10 hours of sleep every night. Try to stick with a solid sleep schedule during the workweek, and eventually, it will become a habit.

Know When to Say No

Achieving an ideal work-life balance may require that you decline when invited to professional or casual events. This can be difficult if you have lofty career goals or a thriving social life, but the long-term results are worth the temporary sacrifices. Sometimes, you have to make tough decisions to make that work-life balance possible. Spreading yourself too thin only makes you less effective in both settings. Choose which personal plans and professional projects mean the most to you, and let the less important ones go.

Communicate

If you feel like either aspect of your life is lacking, communicate with the people around to you to find a solution. For instance, if you feel like you're working too many hours to keep up with your personal life, talk to the scheduling manager about reducing your hours. If you know you're not going to be able to follow through on a personal plan, let people involved know in advance. There are times when you may not be able to achieve a perfect work-life balance, but communication goes a long way in helping your colleagues, friends and family understand and work with you to find compromises.

It may take time before your find a work-life balance that fits. Try not to become complacent or discouraged. Stay organized, focused and active, and eventually, you will be able to tread the fine line between professional ambition and a rewarding personal life.
