Green jobs are a growing field. Is there room for women?
I've heard an awful lot about the growth of green jobs over the past year. The only dilemma, for half of the population at least, is that these green jobs are in traditionally male-dominated fields. This leaves little room for women to get in on this growing industry and help make a difference in our planet's future.
That isn't to say that there aren't women who are interested in installing solar panels or doing other green jobs, but for the majority of women, there haven't been many options. However, there are several growing initiatives to change this.
One of the most promising ideas is to offer economic incentives for white collar green jobs. This would help to create more small businesses that work in the green industry. For example, a small business that installs solar panels would need clerical staff, administrators, project managers and the like. This would provide additional opportunities for both genders as well as increase the growth of this very important industry.
So far, all of the government support for green jobs has been focused around training technicians in the field. However, without qualified business people and management, these technicians won't be able to find work, making all the training useless. It seems to me that the idea is a win-win proposition for everyone.
Currently, Congress has been looking at ways to support small businesses in an effort to help the economy recover and create new jobs. I think that it's easy to see how both of these ideas can be brought together to help build an industry. Offering support and incentives for women to enter green industries and start small businesses could have a huge impact on our economy.
