  • POSITION SUMMARY

    Exercising thorough knowledge of department coding policies and procedures, oversees office operations, assists in administering personnel related duties and acts as the liaison with hospital staff. Coordinates the daily work of subordinate staff and resolves coding problems.

    SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION EXERCISED:

    Directs the work of lower classified personnel such as Senior Medical Record Coders/Abstractors, Medical Records Coders and Data Control Clerks.

    MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED:

    Standard office equipment including, but not limited to, PC's, printers and other hospital-wide computer systems.

    TYPICAL DUTIES:

    1. Ensures accuracy of coding by performing ongoing data quality checks on Coding staff and reporting findings to supervisor to optimize hospital reimbursement. Ensures corrections are made, and in conjunction with Supervisor, analyzes data output to identify coding problems and participates in corrective action as needed.

    2. Assists in personnel related matters such as time reporting, preparing performance evaluations and interviewing applicants; trains new staff and assigns work. Coordinates daily staff assignments and assigns staff to accommodate daily office priorities to assure quantity goals.

    3. Serves as a focal point for answering questions and solving problems for subordinate staff and researching coding questions on difficult records including reimbursement problems and DRG related issues/problems.

    4. Acts as a liaison for coding DRG and reimbursement questions for the hospital community and with staff from outside coding services contracting firms to assure a smooth work flow. Interacts with Patient Accounts, Information Systems and Admitting to solve problems.

    5. Acts as an authority in the absence of the Supervisor, exercising tact and good judgment.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Associates degree in Health Information Technology or Bachelors in Health Information Administration preferred with three years coding in an acute care facility in a training/detailed project role; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Successful completion of American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) accreditation examination for Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or (Registered Health Information Technician) RHIT or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) preferred. Knowledge of ICD-9CM and ICD-10CM required.

    Pay Range

    Pay Range: $ 25.53 - $ 35.75 Hourly

    The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
