  • POSITION SUMMARY

    Responsible for in-depth analysis of medical records to abstract all diagnoses and procedures. Assigns codes from appropriate coding classification system. Assigns DRG utilizing grouper based on payer.

    SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION EXERCISED:

    May coordinate and check the work of Coder Trainees

    MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED:

    CRT, personal computer, photocopier, telephone

    TYPICAL DUTIES:

    1. Performs in depth analysis of medical records to abstract diagnoses and procedures.

    2. Confers with Physicians to obtain greater specificity and/or clarification on possible diagnoses.

    3. Uses thorough knowledge of coding systems and grouper logic to assign appropriate codes and DRG assignment taking into consideration service intensity weights to assign optimal DRG. Understands third party payers to enable selection of appropriate grouper.

    4. Insures integrity of data prior to transmission.

    5. Inputs data into computer for billing, research, and clinical analysis purposes.

    6. Reports reportable diagnoses to New York State Congenital Malformation and Alzheimer Registries.

    7. As necessary, provides Physicians and other staff with information relative to coding and DRG's.

    8. Prepares reports as requested and related clerical tasks.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Associates degree in Health Information Technology. Minimum of two years coding in an acute care facility preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience. Successful completion of American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) accreditation examination for Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or (Registered Health Information Technician) RHIT or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) preferred. Knowledge of ICD-9CM and ICD-10CM required.

    Pay Range

    Pay Range: $ 21.03 - $ 28.56 Hourly

    The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
