Staff Accountant

Description

We are seeking a Staff Accountant based in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. The role is integral to our team, focusing on full-cycle accounting for a portfolio of properties. The successful candidate will support the Accounting Manager and Controller across a range of responsibilities, including preparing journal entries for month-end close and reviewing payables and receivables.

Responsibilities

• Provide support to the Accounting Manager and Controller across all aspects of accounting

• Handle full-cycle accounting for a portfolio of properties, ensuring all financial records are maintained accurately

• Prepare and enter journal entries for month-end close, including accruals, depreciation, amortization, capitalization and true-up entries

• Review payables to ensure they have accurate GL codes and proper approvals

• Evaluate accounts receivable for reasonableness and accuracy, working with property managers to ensure rent roll accuracy

• Process expense approvals and analyze variances

• Review ledger details, record adjusted entries on assigned accounts, and handle partnership accounting, including consolidation/elimination entries

• Prepare bank reconciliations and assist in year-end audits and tax preparation work

• Serve as a reliable resource to vendors, accounting department co-workers and other company personnel

• Perform related clerical duties and assist in other duties as needed

Skills Required

• Minimum 5 years' staff accountant experience

• Strong problem-solving skills, with a focus on streamlining processes

• Experience with financial statement preparation, balance sheet, income statement, cash flows statement

• Solid understanding of GAAP and accrual concept versus cash accounting

• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to respond to questions from property managers, A/P and A/R personnel

• Willingness to work in a fast-paced environment and meet month-end closing deadlines

• Proficiency in running and maintaining accruals in Microsoft Excel; financial modeling skills a plus

• Strong experience with MS Office (Excel, Powerpoint, Word, Outlook)

• Strong organizational skills and ability to work both within a team and independently

• Attention to detail is crucial for this role.

Requirements

• A minimum of five years of experience in a Staff Accountant role or similar

• Demonstrated proficiency in Commercial Property Management

• Prior experience in Fund Accounting, particularly in the Non-Profit sector

• Familiarity with Full Cycle Accounting practices

• Proficiency in handling General Ledger operations

• Knowledge and experience in Accrual Accounting

• A keen attention to detail and strong analytical skills

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

• A bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field is preferred.
