  • To direct daily operations of the Sterile Processing Department at the University of Virginia Health System; including: organizing staffing and monitoring of work quality. Provide leadership direction and oversight for the development and implementation of Sterile Processing high level disinfection and sterilization policies procedures and processes. Responsible for assuring instrumentation supplies and other key resources are available in a timely manner to support surgical services and other dependent areas.

    • Assure the standards of operation of the department comply with the standards set by regulatory agencies such as the Virginia Department of Health Joint Association of Advancement of Medical Instrumentation Commission and others.

    • Responsible for the operations and processes associated with the decontaminating prepping sterilization of instruments.

    • Provide direct supervision to SPD personnel.

    • Hire evaluate the performance and provides corrective action as necessary for SPD personnel. Develops criteria / expectations for staff in meeting goals of the department.

    • Communicates in timely consistent manner.

    • Assign and prioritize workload; evaluate and standardize operating procedures and effectively troubleshoot and resolve issues and problems as they arise.

    • Review and approve time off requests monitor attendance and tardiness and ensure adequate coverage for all areas of responsibility.

    • Encourage mentor and facilitate the career development of the employees in the department. This includes but is not limited to department orientation in-service training and continuous education of Sterile Processing staff.

    • Develop and implement departmental performance improvement activities and assure ongoing staff participation.

    • Review customer feedback i.e. the Main OR OPSC and clinic leaders in order to respond compile and analyze supporting data to implement beneficial procedural changes as appropriate and feasible.

    • Act as a champion of the SPM Instrument Tracking System.

    • Perform system administrator duties and utilize and .maintain the system.

    • Utilize the system's reporting capabilities to identify opportunities for improvements within the department.

    • Ensure the physical environment is maintained.

    • Establish and enforce fire and safety regulations for the area following established protocols and ensuring compliance with JCAHO OSHA AAMI and Hospital guidelines.

    • Identify areas for self-improvement and actively seeks opportunities to strengthen and expand skills and abilities.

    • Attend seminars and training sessions to maintain appropriate level of professional competency.

    • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

    Position Compensation Range: $54,558.40 - $87,297.60 Annual

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent required Associate's Degree Preferred.

    Experience: 3 years progressive leadership experience within sterile processing preferred, preferably in a hospital setting. 3 years' experience working within sterile processing preferred.

    Licensure: Certification as CRCST (Certified Registered Central Sterile Technician) through IAHCSMM OR certification as CSPDT (Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician) through CBSPD required.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Job requires sitting/standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping/traveling and reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive). Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. May be exposed to fumes, chemicals, vibrations, heat, noise, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
