Getting a Job Without a Degree

The competitive job market has led many to believe that a person must have a college degree to even be considered for a position at a company these days. While this is true in many cases, it's still possible to obtain gainful employment without having graduated from a university. Here are a few tips for getting a job without a college degree.

  1. Get an education: While you may not need a formal degree, you do need skill and training in some area. You have to convince hiring managers that you are just as capable of fulfilling the job requirements as someone with a college degree. The great thing is you can obtain this training in a number of alternative ways. In addition to taking courses at a local or an online school, you can attend seminars, read industry-relevant books, or work as an apprentice to another professional. Do what you must to hone your skills in the industry.
  1. Choose the right profession: A number of professions don't require a college degree for entry. While some of these jobs fall into the manual labor category, such as carpenter, plumber, or landscaper, some don't require such backbreaking work. Freelance writing, Web development, purchasing agent, some administrative positions, and even a few tech jobs like computer programming can be obtained without a college degree.
  1. Tap connections: Having the right connections can help you get past educational requirements and into the job you want. Friends can introduce you to hiring managers and put in a good word for you. Don't worry if you currently don't know anyone in advantageous places. Look for opportunities to network with industry professionals whenever possible, such as at conferences or local Chamber of Commerce events. Industry allies can provide more than job leads, so take the time to form sincere relationships with the people you meet.
  1. Write a resume that sells: You will be competing against people who have graduated from postsecondary institutions. Because of this, you must work harder at selling yourself to potential employers. Research the position to determine what the job requirements are and then organize your resume to highlight the relevant knowledge and skills you have acquired. If the job calls for a college graduate, you can acknowledge in the cover letter that you don't have a degree, but talk about the equivalent education and training you have received that qualifies you for the position.

At the end of the day, employers want people who will get the job done. Show employers that you are able to help solve their problems and they will likely hire you even if you don't have a college degree.
